A MARINE MARVEL

The history of Swiss luxury horologer Rolex’s iconic Deepsea wristwatch dates back to 1926 when it launched the Oyster—the first waterproof wristwatch in the world. Subsequent deep-sea expeditions to the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench over the years moulded the ticker into a masterpiece in marine exploration. Unveiled in 2014, the commemorative model of the Rolex Deepsea flaunts a deep-blue to pitch-black gradient dial reminiscent of the ocean’s twilight zone, with Chromalight hour markers and hands fitted with a luminescent material that emits a blue glow. A diver’s delight, the watch also boasts the Rolex-patented Ringlock System case architecture that enables it to resist extreme water pressure up to a depth of 3,900m. The Triplock winding crown, protected by a crown guard, guarantees watertight security. Further, the case of the Rolex Deepsea is equipped with a helium escape valve patented by Rolex in 1967, which allows built-up pressure to escape during the diver’s decompression stages in a hyperbaric chamber. The unidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert that allows divers to monitor their underwater and decompression times, with its knurled edge ensuring excellent grip. Equipped with calibre 3235, the Rolex Deepsea is certified as a Superlative Chronometer. (Price on request)
