During the lockdown, we binged everything Showmax, Netflix, and Amazon Prime has to offer – I went so far down the rabbit hole that I ended up watching some truly bizarre documentaries on Amazon Prime. (Has anyone else seen 3rd Reich: Hitler’s UFOs? Anyone?) For those looking for some (more) compelling stories, swap that TV screen for a set of earphones. Here are the podcasts we’re obsessed with – you can listen to all of them on Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes.
The Baron of Botox
This 10-part documentary series by Justine Harman and the team behind Broken Harts (another great podcast, but it will make you lose all hope in humanity) tells the story of Dr. Fredric Brandt, who went from running a small dermatology practice to becoming Hollywood’s go-to dermatologist. Everyone loved him, but as his success grew, so too did his addiction to the product he was peddling. You may remember Martin Short’s character Dr. Grant on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, an obvious parody of the doctor that many felt led to his eventual suicide. But The Baron of Botox shows that there’s more to the story than we know.
Dolly Parton’s America
America A nine-part journey into the Dollyverse – what more could you ask for? The podcast takes a deep dive into the life of Dolly Parton, who as we can all agree – is a saint. Host Jad Abumrad interviews the country music icon as well as her closest friends, her manager, celebs and ordinary Americans ‘who have taken her into their souls’. If you aren’t a fan yet, you’ll be buying tickets to Dollypalooza after this, guaranteed. (You know, once the world rights itself.)
