When Lara Hastings joined the Kaikohe Volunteer Fire Brigade at 22, her first call-out was a methamphetamine lab explosion. From 9.30pm until 5am the next day, she helped to secure the site and from that moment, the mum-of one was hooked.

“You never know what you’re going to get,” says the Kaikohe medical receptionist, 28. “Sometimes it’ll be an accident or a fire up in the bush. We’re also first responders for the ambulance and get called out for a lot of cardiac arrests as well as suicides.”
