DERBY FLIES TO VICTORY

There was late drama as the 19th Flying Scotsman vintage rally drew to a close.

The HERO-ERA event started near Chester and drew 59 crews from around the world for its 12-14 April edition.

Day one's destination was Lake Windermere, and while Paul Dyas and Mark Appleton topped the timesheets at lunch in their 1937 Bentley 44-litre, their progress wasn't helped by a spin on the leg's final test, leaving them second by 8 secs at Friday's close.

Unfortunately, 2023 winners Paul Crosby and Ali Proctor (1939 MG TB) had their title defence halted by a broken differential on test five, increasing the chance of a new winner. Theo Hunt and Jimmy Galliver (1933 Frazer Nash TT Replica) hoped it might be them as they led the way.
