While going through a superbly written piece in the Forbes magazine, I came across this idea of adaptability being the 2023 word of the year for supply chains. And immediately I knew that I had to explore this further. Supply chains have seen a lot since 2020 and are now less like what they used to be a decade ago.
COVID-19 pandemic took the world as its hostage in early 2020 and one after the other the dominos of the global supply chain fell in what could be said as the most chaotic manner. I remember vividly when the WHO declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic spreading like a wildfire. As a part of the control measures, all economic activity was ceased, including supply chain nodes, thereby triggering the prolonged container shortage.
Until the end of 2021, supply chains across the world were trying their best to get a grip on the situation, barring those of the essentials - which worked both tirelessly and flawlessly. Just as the industry entered 2022 with a somewhat better standing, Russia attacked Ukraine and it looked like the delicate house of cards crashed again. The war has created a separate chain of disruptions that tested supply chains across continents. The West moving closer to the China plus One strategy and battling the onset of recession are a part of the result of such tumultuous times.
