WHETHER IT'S HER CAREER OR HER LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP, THE STAR PLAYS BY HER OWN RULES
Kate Hudson No-one tells me what to do

It’s kind of ironic how Kate Hudson’s breakthrough roll was Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film Almost Famous. Lane was a groupie – or “Band-Aid” – but we all know the character was destined to be in the spotlight. For Hudson, becoming a rock star in real life is a full circle moment and for fans, her transition from actress to singer has been a long time coming.

“It kind of makes sense,” Hudson recently told CBS’ Sunday Morning, when the interviewer commented that her Oscar-nominated Almost Famous role was fitting, in retrospect. “Probably a reason why Cameron hired me,” she added.

But as high as her star rose in Hollywood, Hudson was actually eager to showcase more than just her acting talent and rockstar charisma. In the same interview, Hudson admitted she’d spent her entire career trying to land a part in a musical, but was never cast. One of those roles actually ended up going to Nicole Kidman.

“Any musical that you’ve seen in the last 15 years, I have auditioned for it!” she laughed. “I’ll never forget one of my favourite auditions of all time was Moulin Rouge! with Baz Luhrmann. And we had so much fun.

“At the time, it was written for – I was like 19 at the time – it was actually written for a young girl. And Nicole ended up doing it – she wanted to do it! And I was like, ‘Oh well, my chances are gone!’”
