"It'll make Chitthi happy," Appa replied without looking up.
Ambuja was distraught. "But what about us," she cried.
Appa stopped stuffing the cloth bag. He kneeled down and placed his hands on her shoulders.
"Know something? Each time we give, we get something in return."
Ambuja was puzzled. "Get what, Appa?"
"This," and Appa turned up the corners of her mouth.
Ambuja wiped a tear as she looked at Amma's photo on the wall. She quietly picked up the cage with the parakeet and stepped out of the house, where her Uncle and Aunt were waiting. She didn't say a word as Appa handed the cloth bag to Chitthi.
A small smile came over Chitthi's face as she peeked at the sarees.
Chitthappa spoke up. "Did you think about what I said? Come with me to the Centre. They'll teach you a new skill and help you get a job. How many people take parrot astrology seriously these days? Besides, you're not getting any younger. And neither is your bird."
The parakeet squawked in protest.
"See even Dhannan's protesting," Appa laughed. "He doesn't like being called old."
"Appa, listen to me," Chitthappa said, trying to convince Appa.
But Appa shook his head and hoisted his cloth bag on his shoulder. "Let's go, Ambuja."
As they waved Chitthi and Chitthappa goodbye, Ambuja turned to her father. "Appa, why don't you want to do a course at the Centre like Chitthappa? It's free."
