MICHELLE KEEGAN on playing a 1950s nurse searching for a new life in Australia
A place in THE SUN

TEN POUND POMS
SUNDAY, 9PM, BBC1 DRAMA (BOX SET, BBC iPLAYER)

Prepare to be whisked away to the other side of the world as a group of adventure-seekers swap dreary post-war Britain in 1956 for sun-soaked Australia in BBC1’s glossy new drama Ten Pound Poms.

Created by BAFTA-winning writer Danny Brocklehurst, the six-part series is inspired by the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme, which saw over a million Britons head to Oz between the 1940s and 1970s in search of better housing and job prospects – all for just a tenner – as the Australian government tried to increase the country’s population and find a workforce for its booming industries.

The drama centres around Kate Thorne (played by Corrie and Our Girl star Michelle Keegan), who ends up travelling to Australia alone after her fiancé backs out of the move.

The dedicated nurse finds support in new friend Annie Roberts (McMafia’s Faye Marsay) and her husband, Terry (Trigger Point’s Warren Brown), who are keen to start a new life abroad with their two children. However, everyone soon discovers that the dream they’ve been sold is a far cry from reality.

TV Times caught up with Michelle, 35, who’s married to television personality Mark Wright, to find out more…
