If you are hosting a gathering, there are some fundamentals you'll need to address. Ensuring there is ample seating for guests is one. Comfortable seating is a must and if you have the room, design a conversation corner with sofas and side tables to create a more intimate setting. It will also double as a space for you to unwind and put your feet up when the party is over.

Bench seating allows you to fit more people on seats if you are short on space, while bar stools create a relaxed element when teamed with a high table. Ample dining chairs are crucial if it's a seated dinner. If it's not, create a few cosy nooks for an informal gathering, with plush blankets and plump pillows for the younger guests. A couple of feature chairs can also make a big impact. For example, a beautiful egg chair or day bed will have guests lining up.

Position a few occasional tables around for your guests. A sit-down or buffet-style gathering will dictate the size and location of the tables. Strategically placed tables give guests somewhere to pop down their drink or plate of food. They also offer the opportunity to add a little designer decor, like a selection of candles or a touch of greenery.

Taking care of safety aspects is also important, such as making sure pathways are adequately lit and level changes pointed out. Social distancing has become part of the way we live, so facilitate good indoor-outdoor flow so guests are comfortable and can socially distance with ease.
