SUVs are still very popular in Mzansi. While China is bringing in a new one almost every month, we chose six of the best non-Chinese brands on offer

LET'S START WITH the most affordable one-the new Hyundai Creta (above). Only at closer inspection can you recognise a slightly redesigned front-end and rear bumpers, and repositioned daytime running lights. But the feature that has tongues wagging is the new matte colour options, available in silver, black and white. The Creta is more of a city car, and with a 1.5-1. engine you have to plan wisely before you overtake. But you're getting comfort and value for money. Not forgetting the impressive 200mm ground clearance. And to top it all, the newest model is cheaper than the outgoing one.
Let's head to Japan with the only diesel in the line-up - and the Mazda CX-60 3.3-1. Takumi (left) is a rather potent one. While its discontinued predecessor, the CX-5 turbo diesel, featured a 2.2-1. 4-cyl. engine, the CX-60 enters the executive SUV segment with a roaring and rather enjoyable 3.3-1.6 cyl.. Together with smooth gear shifts and a striking design (complemented by stitched leather seats) lots of tech and a Bose sound system, the CX-60 is right up there with the German competition.
MAZDA CX-60 3.3-L. TAKUMI

>> POWER 187kW & 550Nm 0-100km/h 7.4 seconds
>> TOP SPEED 219km/h

Into the Wild
In our previous issue, Dieter Losskarn took the new Hilux GR-S on a 9 200km trip across Southern Africa. Now, he's gushing about driving its SUV sibling, the brand-new Fortuner GR-S, on some dusty Karoo dirt roads. Same power, same price as the double cab - could this be the ideal 4x4 for Africa?
