In the heart of Goa, amidst its scenic beauty and vibrant culture, lies a lesser-known yet deeply cherished tradition that has been passed down through generations. This tradition revolves around the worship of the "Kshetrapal" or local guardian spirits, who are believed to protect and watch over the villages. One such revered guardian is Rashroli, whose annual procession, known as Vadwal is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Chanaivadda, a small hamlet in Arambol.
The concept of Kshetrapal is integral to Goan culture, where these guardian deities are considered protectors of the land and its people. Each village has its own Kshetrapal, enshrined in local temples, and the rituals associated with their worship are a testament to the deep-rooted spirituality and community spirit of the Goan people. The Vadwal procession in Chanaivadda, though small in scale, exemplifies this rich cultural heritage.
Chanaivadda, a quaint enclave comprising just four to five houses, comes alive between the months of June and August. This period, just before Amavasya, is marked by the annual remembrance of Shree Rashtroli, the Kshetrapal of the village. The Rashtroli Devasthan, a modest temple dedicated to the local guridan spirit, becomes the focal point of the celebrations. It is here that about 10 to 15 men from the village gather to pay homage to the deity, continuing a tradition that has endured for hundreds of years.
