Fabienne Leroy, 20, was walking through a car park when she was approached by a well-dressed couple.

Michel Fourniret and Monique Olivier were just weeks away from welcoming their first child.

But heavily pregnant Olivier quickly explained she was unwell, and asked Fabienne for help with directions to the nearest doctor's surgery.

So, on that fateful day in August 1988, Fabienne agreed to join them in their car. She had no way of knowing the couple were on a sadistic killing spree in which they abducted, raped and murdered young women and girls to satisfy Fourniret's sick fantasies.

And she was their next target. After coaxing her into the car, Fourniret and Olivier drove Fabienne to a remote forest where Fourniret sexually assaulted her and shot her in the chest. But it would be 16 years before anyone else knew the horrifying truth.

The murderous couple first met when Fourniret was behind bars for sexual assault and posted an ad in a magazine for a prison pen pal.

Olivier - a former nurse and mother of three received letters in which Fourniret detailed his obsession with young virgins, claiming to have beentraumatised by his mother's incestuous behaviour.

But instead of being horrified and cutting contact, Olivier made a shocking promise to help him lure young women when he was released, if he agreed to kill her ex-husband. While Fourniret never kept his end of the deal, Olivier did.

When Fourniret was released in 1987, they began hatching their evil plans.
