‘NEVER did I ever think I would see a pitch invasion at Beverley Town,’ chuckles chairman Mark Smith.
Saturday, May 11, 2024 is a day that has gone down in club folklore. A record crowd of 1,525 packed into Norwood Park to see the Beavers take on Shirebrook Town in the Northern Counties East League Division One play-off final.
They were treated to a nerve-jangling encounter that finished 1-1 before Beverley swept the majority of the crowd into ecstasy with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out success.
Now more than a month on from that landmark day, the memories are still as fresh as ever for Smith, who has spent the last decade as chairman.
“I’m Beverley Town through and through and I’ve never seen anything like it,” the 54-year-old told The NLP.
“We had a queue to get in, the bar and burger van had record takings.
“The town has really got behind us – and the talk of the town was the play-off final. The weather was perfect and all the stars aligned. It was a really good game and capped with a penalty shootout – what a way to win it.
Incredible
“Old and young raced onto the pitch and players were on the shoulders of fans. It was incredible.”
Although formed in 1902 and enjoying periods of success in the East Riding County League, it’s only been in more recent times that the club have really started to make waves.
