MP vows assisted dying would begin 'as quickly as practicable and safe'

THE MP behind the assisted dying Bill plans to "hold the Government's feet to the fire" to ensure it is introduced "as quickly as is practicable and safe" if it passes into law.

Kim Leadbeater defended tabling amendments that will extend the expected time it will take for a law change to be enacted from two years to four, meaning its introduction could be delayed until 2029.

Critics of the Bill said the time extension shows the law is too complex to be introduced safely, while supporters have complained a delay is unhelpful.

Yesterday Ms Leadbeater insisted assisted dying could be available earlier than four years, which she called a "backstop".
