Extreme conditions brought havoc to roads, rail, air and ferry networks from the early hours.
It left a trail of misery which included:
●Drivers stranded on the snowbound A9 in the Highlands.
●Postponement of Rangers v Ross County in Glasgow because it was too dangerous for the visitors to travel.
●Widespread railway disruption including a tree falling on an overhead wire and catching fire.
●Winds reaching 86mph in Aberdeenshire.
●Cancelled ferries due to stormy waters off the west coast.
●About 10,000 homes left without power.
Yellow weather warnings were in place until this morning for much of northern, western and southern Scotland.
Blizzards left drivers stranded on the A9 between the Falls of Bruar and Dalwhinnie in the Highlands, with the wintry conditions also affecting other parts of the route.
Snow ploughs fought to keep roads open throughout the day.
Dangerous driving conditions on the A9 meant Ross County were unable to travel.
The club tweeted: "Following consultation with Police Scotland regarding today's weather conditions on the A9, this evening's match against Rangers has been postponed."
A train passing Broughty Ferry on its way to Dundee had its windscreen and part of the driver's cabin smashed by a tree.
The driver was reported to be "shaken but not hurt".
All train services between Edinburgh and Helensburgh Central were cancelled as a result of a tree falling and blocking the railway at Dumbarton East.
