STORM Pia plunged preChristmas travels plans into chaos yesterday as Scotland was battered by winds up to 115mph.

The bad weather led to train services being cancelled while ferry routes were suspended and several bridges were closed to high-sided vehicles.

Schools across Shetland were shut and extra electricity engineers were drafted in to deal with power cuts.

More than 2000 homes were left without power in South Uist, Lewis and Orkney.

Homes in Dumfries and Galloway were also affected, while four schools in the council area were closed due to electricity outages.

Wind speeds of up to 115mph were recorded by the Met Office at the Cairngorm summit in the Highlands.

Gusts of 81mph were recorded at Baltasound on Shetland.
