THE only consolation for Newcastle was that it could have been worse as Spurs roared back to top form.
This was a proper humiliation and the worst possible preparation for the Toon's make-or-break Champions League showdown with AC Milan on Wednesday night.
Richarlison scored twice and, for once, looked like the player Tottenham thought they were getting when they paid £60million for him 18 months ago. The Brazilian's double took him to four goals in all competitions this season, which is already one better than he managed in the whole of the last campaign.
But Tottenham's whole team performance felt like a long overdue reaction after a dismal run of five games without a win. Boss Ange Postecoglou praised his two-goal hero and said: "Yeah, Richy was great. Really important. I can't fault the lads. They put in a massive effort today.
"Our attacking play was as good as it has been for a while. We are getting players back. You can see Newcastle are running on fumes. We've gone through that and hopefully, we are coming out the other side."
The game ended on a sour note as Toon striker Callum Wilson accused Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario of a lack of respect" after an angry bust-up.
