On a six-day visit to the US from December 24-29, Jaishankar will start his engagements by meeting the outgoing Biden administration officials.
He is likely to meet Secretary of State Antony Blinken, NSA Jake Sullivan and other senior officials from the Biden team.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is already in the US, and, together with Indian ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra, met Deputy Secretaries of State Kurt Campbell and Richard Verma to set up some of these conversations.
Sources said the idea behind the visit is to ensure Indo-US ties are not impacted by the polarised political atmosphere in the US.
