PRISON SERVICE PAYS OUT €9.3M IN COMPO BILLS

THE Irish Prison Service paid out nearly €9.3million last year in compensation and legal bills for claims made by criminals, prison officers, and civilians.

Lump sums were paid in cases involving chemical hazards, biological hazards, psychological hazards, slopping out, and vehicle collisions.

A detailed breakdown of expenditure has revealed how €5.14m was paid in damages to prisoners in 2021, along with €894,000 in legal fees.

The figure for those who had served time was nearly two-and-a-half times that of 2020 due to a series of finalised claims relating to the lack of in-cell sanitation.
