Prisoners made 1,000 complaints

PRISONERS made almost 1,000 complaints last year with 70 deemed “Category A” alleging assault, excessive force, racial abuse, discrimination or intimidation.

More than a third of gripes came from the high-security Midlands Prison in Co Laois, where 25 individual complaints were logged.

Of the 70 complaints made, just a single one has so far been upheld while one was considered to have been “vexatious”.

Overall 26 complaints were not upheld and two were withdrawn, while the majority are incomplete and still under investigation.
