Another 16-year-old boy was later arrested on suspicion of murder.
Both victims were taken to hospital, where the girl died. The boy suffered injuries that were described as serious but not life-threatening.
The girl – named locally as Holly – was fatally hurt in the Priestpopple area of Hexham, Northumberland, just after 5pm on Friday.
