A STATUS Yellow weather alert comes into effect from 6am today as the mercury gets set to soar above the 33.3C record.

Blistering temperatures of up to 30C are expected - with highs of 33C or more "possible" tomorrow, Met Eireann said.

Tropical nights of more than 200 are also predicted as doctors warn of the risks including heat stress and heatstroke - from a high solar index.
