MUMBAI: A stampede broke out early Sunday at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai as hundreds of travellers attempted to board a Gorakhpur-bound train to their hometowns for the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals. At least ten people were injured in the chaos, with one individual in critical condition, according to civic officials. However, Western Railway (WR) later stated that only two individuals sustained injuries. The figures cannot be reconciled immediately.
The incident occurred around 2:45 am on platform number 1, where the unreserved Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express was moving from the Bandra Terminus (BDTS) yard to the platform ahead of its 5:10 am scheduled departure. With hundreds gathered to secure a seat, the platform became overcrowded, sparking the chaos.
"Ideally, the doors of the coaches are opened only after the train comes to a complete stop at the platform, allowing passengers to board in an orderly queue," stated a WR official, emphasising that boarding procedures are structured to avoid exactly these types of incidents.
According to preliminary reports from WR, as the train was inching its way to the platform, several passengers tried to climb aboard. This risky attempt led to two individuals reportedly slipping and falling while trying to board the moving train.
