GREAT BRITAIN’s 4x400m teams secured a pair of dramatic bronzes to ensure a spot on the podium for all five relay events.
Odds of a full house had looked good after bronze in the mixed 4x400m last week was followed by a silver in the women’s 4x100m and another bronze in the men’s 4x100m on Friday.
And the fact both 4x400m teams looked so assured in qualification meant the question turned to what colour the medal would be.
Yet it proved to be a little more nervy than that – especially in the women’s race.
After the men qualified second fastest, Matt Hudson-Smith had not just bigged up their chances of gold but suggested “if we dig deep” the world record was not out of reach.
“This team can do anything,” he claimed. “Anything is possible when you’ve got your mind on it.”
Lofty goals from a man who was equally frustrated and validated by his individual silver earlier in the week.
