Alex Carter’s friends and family are now desperately trying to ferry him home so he can have a brain operation.
The 38-year-old, who attended school in Ivybridge but now lives in Cornwall, was admitted to an intensive care unit in Guatemala during the first week of this month. His family and friends in the UK have already managed to raise some of the $66,000 (£55,000) needed for his hospital stay, but they are now calling on the yachting and sailing community and anyone who knows Alex to help so he can be flown home, where he can receive the operation he needs and his chances of survival can be greatly improved.
Kate Bell, one of Alex’s friends said his girlfriend, Lucy, and his brother, Byron, also an accomplished sailor, are by his side in Guatemala, but the clock is ticking to bring him home.
Kate said: “We desperately need to fly him back to the UK to receive surgery, otherwise it’s likely he will die of blood clots on the brain.
