Julie Felix, who lives in Looe, has been recognised with an MBE for her services to dance education in the annual list.
It follows a stellar career spanning decades which has seen her perform worldwide and for a host of famous faces, before more recently settling in Cornwall and teaching her craft.
Things were not always rosy as the performer and teacher was once denied a permanent contract doing what she loved, being told that having a black girl in the corps de ballet would look 'out of place! Julie went on to become Britain's first professional black ballet dancer and never let racism hold her back.
Now, she is one of a handful of people from the Westcountry who have been given the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire honour this year.
