On each restart, you would step into an open level and face hordes of foes, thinning their ranks with auto-firing ordnance. The arms you earned from levelling up intensified the chaos, with battles ending after 30 minutes in a frenzy of pixel-art monsters and obscenely high scores.
The experience has remained an orgy of cheap thrills, easy to pour hours into in a way reminiscent of idle games and slot machines. Still, developer Poncle, led by Luca Galante, has wielded the game’s reward loops with generosity, providing players with dopamine bumps without asking them to open their wallets beyond the initial – modest – investment.
