There are several modern innovations that have no place in my mundane life, but just the other day I started a fruitful relationship with Siri, my virtual assistant, who tries her level best at all times to be helpful. I don’t like being overheard when chatting to a robot, so I whisper “Hey Siri” into my iPad and she responds willingly with “Hmm?”
Dipping a toe in the water, I ask, “how many times has Charlie Appleby won the 2000 Guineas?” and in less time than it takes to lob my Placepot ticket on the bonfire, she replies, “This is what I’ve found.”
And sure enough without lifting my index finger to engage Google, or (perish the thought) engaging my brain, she’s bang on the money, leading me to a cutting featuring Coroebus winning last year’s 2000 Guineas. But as we know AI (Artificial Intelligence) has some way to go to achieve total trust and Siri has since led me down a few rabbit holes. Possibly I was mumbling, but I’m yet to find out why, when I requested detailed info on this noble publication I was treated to a song-by-song history of the popular singer/songwriter Birdy. Hmm?
One not-so-modern tool I find indispensable is the Tracker when, by the press of a button, you can never again miss future winners (and yes, losers too) that have caught your eye in running. Now is the time for a spring clean when, with a very few exceptions, you can delete last year’s ‘spottings’ and start afresh.
