The Colosseum (Rome, Italy)
The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is one of the most iconic structures from ancient Rome. Commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and completed in 80 AD under his son, Emperor Titus, it could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.
The Colosseum was primarily used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, and executions.
Its architecture was revolutionary for its time, featuring a complex system of vaults, corridors, and seating tiers that allowed for efficient crowd control and quick exits.
The structure's grandeur represented the power and wealth of the Roman Empire. Though parts of the Colosseum have been damaged by earthquakes, fires, and stone scavengers, much of the structure still stands today. It has been partially restored over the centuries and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980.
The Colosseum remains a major tourist attraction, drawing millions annually. It symbolizes the enduring legacy of Roman engineering and the brutality of ancient Roman entertainment. In recent years, it has become a symbol of anti-capital punishment efforts, with its lights turned on in protest when death sentences are abolished around the world. Despite its age, the Colosseum's design continues to influence modern sports stadiums, showcasing its lasting impact on global architecture and culture.
