Reading are back in the third tier for the first time since 2004 and have enjoyed three Premier League seasons in the intervening years.

Cambridge, by contrast, have forged their way up from the National League to establish themselves in League One under the impressive management of Mark Bonner.

On paper, it’s David versus Goliath. In reality, the U’s are a well-oiled machine with designs on a playoff push following an encouraging start to the season while the Royals have lost three of their first five matches and are still finding their feet after several years of financial issues.

“Nobody needs to tell us what a big club Reading are,” says Bennett, a 21-year-old right-back who joined the U’s from Non-League St Neots as a teenager.
