Access to sculpting software has never been easier. With the advent of apps such as Forger and Nomad Sculpt being released on mobile device platforms over the last few years, artists and creatives now have more opportunity than ever to explore digital sculpting and work on the go in ways that previously tied them down to a desktop computer, or required expensive mobile creative tablets. Today, anyone with a smartphone or tablet can learn to digitally sculpt and even 3D print their creations from the comfort of their own homes.
This is how I was introduced to the digital sculpting world and the journey since has opened doors to many creative opportunities, and introduced me to artistic communities in a way that wasn’t previously possible.
Personally, I’ve also found that it’s proven the perfect stepping stone to taking on more advanced software such as ZBrush. And though the learning curve for other programs may be steeper, the foundations of those workflows were learned on a mobile device.
Since monster and creature creation is a personal passion of mine, for this tutorial we’ll create a simple troll character using Nomad Sculpt on an iPad. We’ll start off with the initial steps of blocking out the forms of the creature, and move all the way through to rendering your final, detailed model.
This tutorial is designed so that even if you’re a complete beginner to the concepts of sculpting, you’ll be able to create a troll in the same design, or use these methods to personalise your own creation using nothing more than the tools available in Nomad Sculpt.
