We love our pets and it can be pretty hard to resist when they beg for another chew W treat or to have their biscuit bowl topped up. However, those indulgences can lead to weight gain and while that extra chunkiness might look cute, it isn't good for them.
If your pet is looking slightly more portly these days, the first thing to know is they're definitely not in the minority. The SPCA estimates more than a quarter of dogs and a fifth of cats are either overweight or obese.
While that's often a sign of a well-loved and pampered pet, this extra padding can lead to health complications such as diabetes, arthritis and respiratory, cardiovascular and urinary tract disease. It can also shorten their lifespan and mean more trips to the vet in their old age.
Veterinarian Dr Tara Morris says obesity is the most prevalent yet preventable form of disease in pets. Here's how to get them fighting fit again!
EXERCISE & DIET
Along with regular walkies, there are also plenty of games you can play if you have room in the backyard to keep your pup entertained. Indoor cats can also be kept active with climbing towers, enrichment toys and interactive play.
