Martyn Williams completes the story of his restoration of an Aveling Barford G series FX roller
The biggest job was cleaning the framework and tinwork. It looked very rough, but the metal was sound. It had been painted yellow, but on stripping the paint the usual mid Brunswick green paint could be seen, the colour that it left the factory in 50 or so years ago.
I have not got sand-blasting equipment - this can be a bit brutal on restorations, but can save time and money in the long run. However, I used 80 grit sanding pads and Starchem paint stripper. This combination was a perfect match, as when you apply the paint stripper for the time it takes to drink a cup of tea the paint is ready to remove. The rolls took a lot of cleaning as the paint was very thick and flaky.
A lot of effort was put into taking it down to bare metal, including the engine block. The machine was given two coats of zinc phosphate primer as soon as the bare metal was exposed. Filler was applied to tinwork where required and sanded down, all taking lots of time.
