CASH-STRAPPED householders who are struggling to pay their bills have been warned to expect even more financial hardship once interest rates are hiked.

The European Central Bank is expected to raise them for the first time in a decade over the summer to combat soaring inflation across the continent.

However, financial watchdogs have told of their concern that low-income families across Ireland are likely to be the hardest hit by the anticipated hikes.
