Parky, as he was affectionately known, passed away peacefully at home in Berkshire surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.
His four-decade-long career hosting his eponymous chat show saw him interview an estimated 2,000 celebrities, including global stars from Madonna to Muhammad Ali.
Leading the tributes, Sir Michael Caine, a good friend of the popular Yorkshireman, said: "Michael Parkinson was irreplaceable, he was charming, always wanted to have a good laugh. He brought out the best of everyone he met."
Hailing "one of the greats", Sir Elton John said: "I loved his company and his incredible knowledge of cricket and Barnsley Football Club. A real icon who brought out the very best in his guests."
Comedian Eddie Izzard called him "the king of the intelligent interview", while Matt Lucas described him as "a titan of television, the ultimate chat show host".
Gyles Brandreth said: "Parky' was one of my heroes - and a lovely guy," and Angela Rippon added: "He has left a treasure trove of conversations with some of the greatest names of the 20th century".
Michael's incredible roll call of guests included Sir Paul McCartney, Helen Mirren, Kylie Minogue, Orson Welles and even Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.
