In the seven years since art-scene power couple Carl and Katharine Kostyál moved from London to Milan, their home in the chic city has become a hub of creativity. “As gallery owners, it’s much more interesting to introduce collectors and artists by involving them all in the same world – our own,” Katharine tells us. “Work and life merge and overlap in our house.”
Their family’s apartment and gallery in the fashion quarter is a colourful testament to this approach. Spread over an entire floor of a fin-de-siècle palazzo, it has ample space for avant-garde art to catch the eye, as well as cosy corners to invite conversation.
Add in stylish yet sturdy furniture, a grand piano and yards of books, and it speaks volumes of the happy life led here by the couple and their children, Giulia, 14, and 11-year-old twins László and George.
Built in the late 1800s by a noble Sicilian family, the palazzo was designed mainly as a business setting – somewhere to showcase their influence.
But in the early 1960s, a descendant of the dynasty invited a close friend, famous Milanese architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni, to reimagine it as a residence.
With a talent for giving grandeur a human scale and moulding classical beauty to fit the modern era, Luigi used lower ceilings, curved walls and sail-shaped arches to create a welcoming ambience.
The Kostyáls recognised at once that here was not only a wonderful new home, but also an ideal setting for their artists’ work. Inspired by its elegance, they’ve searched out vintage Italian pieces to furnish it, taking special delight in finds from Azucena, the company that Luigi himself founded.
Katharine, what motivated you and Carl to move to Milan?
