1 BRASSERIE DUBILLOT
For the best classic bistro fare
Step inside (remember to make a reservation!) and you'll easily - imagine you've arrived on the set of a Wes Anderson movie. Striking design, colourful and eclectic decor and idiosyncratic details make this bistro a mustvisit.
Set in one of the oldest districts in Paris, on the slightly seedy Rue Saint-Denis, Brasserie Dubillot epitomises the current Parisian trend of a modern brasserie serving traditional French classics. All dishes are 100% home-made and seasonal, focusing on excellent local produce. Starters include the simple yet popular oeuf mayonnaise, rillettes, pâtés and terrines.
Main courses cover all the bases: sausages with smooth, creamy mash and jus so tasty you might be tempted to lick the plate; steak and frites with sauce Béarnaise; fish of the day; steak tartare; and a vegetarian option "du jour". You will want to leave space for dessert, as the Paris-Brest is considered one of the best in the city. 222 Rue Saint-Denis, 75002; nouvellegardegroupe.com, @nouvellegardegroupe
2 CUCINA MUTUALITÉ
For the best of Alain Ducasse (on a budget)
As one of the most awarded Michelin-star chefs, Alain Ducasse has an impressive CV of starred restaurants across the globe, and Cucina Mutualité is his gift to food-loving folk on a less-than-five-star budget. The family- and wallet-friendly fare is both comforting and familiar, yet still elevated and elegant.
In honour of the role that Catherine de' Medici played in the evolution of French food - a huge portrait of her watches over the restaurant - this is an Italian bistro serving antipasti, pizza, pasta, and classics such as osso bucco and escalope à la Milanese.
