Mr Kerr, who was appointed to the role at the end of 2022, has been suspended following allegations of misconduct.
A statement from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez confirmed the news on Wednesday lunchtime. It added that neither the Office nor the Commissioner would be commenting further at this time.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct also confirmed it was investigating the matter. This was followed by a statement from the Police Ombudsman in Northern Ireland, who confirmed a criminal investigation into serious allegations of sexual offences had been started against the suspended police chief, who served with the Police Service of Northern Ireland for 27 years.
