Photographed by Scott A Woodward, our cover story is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional bahay na bato designed by JJ Acuña, in collaboration with his sister, lawyer and philanthropist Geraldine Acuña- Sunshine. A true love letter to their heritage, the Acuña family home in the heart of the metropolis is a beautiful resort-like haven filled with local art and furniture. 

We also explore this concept of Modern Filipino Architecture in a more in-depth manner as we speak to the architect Manny Miñana on the theories
behind his body of work. From traditional weaves becoming a mainstay for home décor to a young Filipina, Mirei Monticelli, making waves at this year’s Salone di Mobile, this issue champions successful intersection of our exceptional craftsmanship and ingenious homegrown designers.

Aside from this, we also feature the thoughtfully conceptualised space of banker, Anne Alonso, who worked with Joseph Goyenechea on a full renovation of her 3-bedroom apartment that showcases her love for unique antiques and local art. Other creative personalities who opened their homes to us are the vivacious Marga Nograles and the über cool Bea Ledesma.

For this volume, we centre our dialogue around luxury, a concept whose foundations are contrasting ideas of rarity and abundance. Broadly speaking these days, it arrives primarily in a debate of quiet versus its louder counterpart. I thought I would focus on its more joyful aspects for the first issue I am editing. After all, what unites most people’s idea of splendour, is that regardless of stylistic preference, it brings us happiness.

For our cover, how the Philippines’ beautiful pieces and materials have inspired Ale Mora’s piso in Madrid reminds us that some of the best artisans are found in our shores. Pieces commissioned in the Philippines have accompanied her in all the places she has lived in.

We celebrate the winners of the 2024 edition of the Tatler Homes Design Awards. Another stellar project by Nazareno Architecture + Design, Casa 39, takes the top spot for Best Architectural Concept. Their sleek, yet warm design that nods to Japanese Zen philosophy and marries it with tropical luxury is outstanding.

Not to be missed is the striking South Yarra home of our Tastemaker, Martine Ho, a unique family abode in one of Melbourne’s most liveable districts photographed by JM Tubera. Franz Sorilla wrote an excellent piece on Manila’s Brutalist architecture whose beautiful and fragile existence is threatened by the global appeal of fancy glass and steel constructs.

This issue reminds us to exhale; to release all tension, worry and anxiety; to allow the calm to wash over us as the air gently escapes from our lungs, inducing a relaxing nervous response. We invite our readers to take pause, to relish the liminality of openness embodied in the great outdoors, expansive vistas and soothing palettes.

Our cover story features Rajo Laurel and Nix Alañon’s Batangas escape, The Monohouse. Designed as a serene haven from the chaotic urban lifestyle, it is the epitome of allowing the natural environment to take center stage. From all angles, there is always a flash of green, sun-kissed mountains or endless ocean blues.

On our cover, mother and entrepreneur Kai Lim shares with Tatler Homes about why she dedicates so much effort to opening her home to others. She is the radiant embodiment of the most gracious hostess. Juana Manahan-Yupangco also serves a vibrant spread, with recipes from her latest cookbook that elevates Filipino vegetables like never before.

We also hear from Chito Vijandre and Ricky Toledo on how to decorate in the fashion of “stealth wealth” as well as tips from Max Soliven for incorporating statement carpeting in your home.

We also champion collaborations between luxury brands and artists and artisans in our usual roundup of Editor’s Picks. Being able to cooperate in creative endeavours is the epitome of abundant thinking. I personally love the positive vibrational quality of these partnerships and their outcomes.

Lastly, we have selected seven stunning homes from across the world for you to be inspired by. Each of them has a unique tale with the living spaces being the focal point of the home. Locally, we have a gorgeous private residence by the architect Miguel Pastor for a family who loves to entertain. Photographed by Scott A Woodward, the home creatively uses a mix of textures and materials to showcase the homeowner’s art collection. There is also a thoughtfully designed guest extension by Jason Buensalido that embraces the natural elements as an integral part of the concept. The more time passes, the richer the patina of the edifice.

This issue is all about celebrating these incredible individuals who create with gusto, thrusting the Philippines into the limelight in the field of architecture and design. This year’s edition of the Tatler Homes Design Awards was a resounding success, with so many noteworthy entries which made our selection process difficult but the results are so meaningful.

We are proud to feature on our pages some of the winning projects such as Anthony Nazareno and Christian Guerrero’s Banaba House; Kitty Bunag’s private residence and studio; and the home of Tastemaker, Rosanna Ocampo Rodriguez, whose chic living room graces our cover.

Rita Nazareno and Gabby Lichauco, runners-up for Best Use of Colour for their spectacular work with the OB Montessori School, open up their studio and workshop for us. Discover the different crafts from across the country but particularly the wealth of artistry Lake Sebu has
to offer with a photo essay by Scott A Woodward. Dive deep into the universe of Budji Layug as we showcase his recent exhibit. Mark Wilson enlightens us on how best to illuminate our home while Migs Rosales shares advice on how to curate your art collection.

As always, we love to celebrate on the table and Erica Concepcion-Reyes and Lora Fonacier show us how to do this with panache. In line with all things Filipino, we break down the elements of a good boodle fight and find some surprising wine pairings for the classic fiesta fare.

Lastly, celebrated food writer Micky Fenix recounts the forgotten fruits of her childhood. It is beautifully accompanied by illustrations by Mia de Lara.

Speaking of chic, designer and author, Blue Carreon has recently published a book, Equestrian Life in the Hamptons, wherein he shares his passion for the unique atmosphere of beach and bridle.

Tatler Homes latest issue is all about inviting happiness and joy in the home, whether that’s in the form of luxurious catered dinners or simple movie night get together.

Ken and Isa Mishuku, owners of vintage furniture platform Mid-Century Manila, open their home filled with original collectibles and share how they’ve embraced the mindset of Ray and Charles Eames. Tokyo-based photographer, Andrew Faulk, artistically reinterprets Isamu Noguchi’s philosophies and aesthetic through a series of images taken across Japan.

We juxtapose Jet’s minimalist yet heritage-centric home with the wonderful, creative grit of her family’s atelier. Chef Aaron Isip also opens his bachelor pad, sharing his Filipino wabisabi ethos. There are also wonderful stories from across our country featuring master potters, historic mansions and sustainable woodsmiths. And placing the spotlight on raw materials, we also showcase handblown glass, luxury leather and sleek stone lighting.
