Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said: “The only constant in life is change.” I couldn’t think of a more fitting opening to my final column at BONA. It’s hard to believe that it’s been two years since my first article. Since then, my life has changed tremendously in the areas of business, relationships (still no second husband, but we persevere) and personal brand. It was while I was thinking about the constant changes that we experience in life that the team and I felt that the appropriate column to bid you farewell with would be one that looks at the cost of change, in particular, relocating. Whether it’s between suburbs, towns, cities or countries, relocating can be draining, both financially and emotionally. For instance, I have relocated three times since my divorce, and admit to a number of things that I could have done better to make the process less costly. Relocating is not always a personal decision though. Some people move because of work requirements, and as such, it is not always easy weighing up the financial benefits. As a global citizen who believes that there’ll be many more relocations in my future, I reached out to two experts for tips on how to be smarter while moving.
