PLYMOUTH'S Firestone Bay has been officially designated as a bathing water site following a campaign led by Labour MP Luke Pollard.
The Department For Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) says the bay, around Devil's Point and the Royal William Yard, will have its new status from this May - in time for a full summer of safe swimming.
The status means the bathing waters will be regularly monitored by the Environment Agency - allowing swimmers to know they are bathing in clean water. Defra says nearly 93% of bathing waters met the highest standards of 'good' and 'excellent' last year thanks to robust regulation.
Following a two-week public consultation, Firestone Bay is one of four UK sites officially designated as bathing waters ahead of the 2023 summer season. The four new sites will take the total number of bathing waters across the country to 424, the highest number ever.
