PLYMOUTH'S Derriford Hospital is braced today for the start of a four-day doctors' strike described asthe most disruptive walkout in NHS history.
Patients are being urged to attend appointments as planned, but hospital chiefs admit they do not know how badly their services will be hit by the industrial action.
Dr Si Horne, deputy medical director at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP), said: "This is expected to be the biggest industrial action in NHS history. During the strike, we will prioritise resources to protect emergency treatment, critical care, maternity, neonatal care and trauma.
"We cannot underestimate the impact this industrial action will potentially have on our patients. However, anyone with an appointment should continue to attend as planned, unless they've been contacted to rearrange."
