Police have confirmed to The Herald that a handful of Travellers arrived at King George V field on Wednesday evening at around 8.45pm, but several more arrived the following day, using a council vehicle access point off Haye Road which is usually blocked by a metal bollard.
However, the bollard appears to have gone and photos of Travellers carefully manoeuvring large caravans over the pavement and along the mud-track have since been widely shared on social media.
In addition, it appears a gap has appeared between two large rocks at the far end of the playing field car park granting just enough room for cars and other smaller vehicles direct access onto the pitches.
Witnesses have already spoken of seeing cars and vans racing across the rugby pitches as they travel to and from the encampment. A number of the vans appear to be branded with the names of firms who offer a variety of work, including one which suggests it cleans patios and driveways and another acts as a roofing contractor.
