IT’S been a turbulent time in Plymouth politics recently, culminating in the tree felling saga on Armada Way, which attracted nationwide attention – none of it good.
And while a host of national articles highlighted that Plymouth City Council’s tree problem was the root of all its ills, in fairness, the root causes which could result in voters ousting the ruling Conservatives today may have more to do with political in-fighting, the cost of living crisis and soaring charges, rather than just the ‘monster’ felling of the city centre’s tree population.
The last couple of years have been a roller coaster ride for Plymouth’s politics which began with accusations and allegations within the ruling Conservative party, resulting in a ‘vote of no confidence’ launched by Labour councillors against leader Nick Kelly, and saw relative newcomer Richard Bingley take the reigns of the council.
