A single Dad's Marathon against Autism

But when it comes to special kids, they have some special needs and a few associated challenges too. I am a single parent to an Autistic kid-a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. To me, in simple words, it is his way of being for which I must mend my lifestyle and routines.

First, it is not a disease, and the root causes are still unknown so there are no medications that treat the core symptoms of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Medication may help one manage high energy levels, inability to self-harming behavior, and focus, some psychological conditions, such as anxiety or depression. The only way out is the therapy interventions and routines.

Second, as a parent or a caregiver, I needed to understand how my son feels, behaves, communicates, interacts, and learns. This was helped by much-needed knowledge that I gathered by reading articles, meeting doctors, and attending seminars. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others can work and live with little to no support. There is often nothing about how they look that sets them apart from other people. One needs to come to terms with the fact that "The child needs help", but one must not sit back home thinking - the child has autism, so nothing can be done.
