MY SEARCH FOR 'Cherry Blossom Blooms in East Asia' led me to three countries: Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. While Japan and South Korea garner global attention with their vibrant Sakura festivals, Taiwan offers a quieter, more unique charm. Notably, Taiwan's cherry blossoms have an extended bloom period, lasting from late January to late March, giving visitors plenty of time to admire their beauty. This, along with its rich cultural heritage, diverse ecosystems, and modern allure make it the perfect for travellers like me, seeking an unforgettable adventure.
Serenity on Sun Moon Lake
As my flight descends into Taipei, I find myself glued to the city's skyline, trying to spot Taipei 101, the tallest building in both the city and the country. Though the fog obscures my view, I console myself with the thought of visiting it soon. Upon my arrival at Taipei Airport, I prepare for a three-hour road trip to Nantou County by grabbing some cold noodles from a 7-Eleven store.
It is late evening by the time we reach Nantou and make our way to the hotel.
"Nantou County is in the centre of Taiwan and is home to nature's bounty. Taiwan's highest mountain, Yushan, its largest natural lake, Sun Moon Lake, and the source of the longest river, the Zhuoshui River, are all in Nantou.
It also harbours a wealth of indigenous tribes, including the Atayal, Bunun, Tsou, and Thao," says Yaochu Hu, our guide. Over the next two days, we will be visiting various places in Nantou that promise relaxation, a connection with nature, and cultural exploration. I crash for the night, excited to explore Nantou the next day.
