The growth of Indian food processing and safety sector aided by the government’s skill development policy, has strengthened the process of food production, which has had a positive impact on exports, however, exposing a dearth in the whole process.
The process of food production involves many steps that demand expertise, knowledge, know-how and skills to be utilised in a manner that ultimately deems it fruitful. An agrarian economy, India has a dynamic food processing industry which is worth an estimated EUR 58 billion. In terms of economic growth and employment, the food processing industry is crucial for the country.
Processed food skilling
Changing lifestyle in urban areas, need for convenience and high disposable incomes along with rising share in the export market has developed the market and boosted the processed food sector in the country. This thus becomes a contributing factor for creation of employment opportunities. According to a National Skill Development Council (NSDC) report, the food processing industry is expected to generate around 4.4 million additional jobs by 2022. Industrial growth along with demand for quality standards and technology-adoption in manufacturing are driving the need for fresh skilling and up-skilling in the sector. However, the industry would struggle to grow unless the disparity in demand and supply of skilled labour is addressed.
