Freezing food for preservation has been an age old technique that is now being technologically harnessed to cater to the concept of frozen food. Today, frozen food encompasses anything from succulent chicken nuggets to the desi parantha (Indian flat bread) available in fancy packaging in big malls and grocery shops under the “frozen food” category for the busy urban family.

Frozen food is available in the form of various ready-to-eat food items that can be cooked and served in the least possible time. The Indian middle-class has taken a strong liking towards this almost ready to consume food given that it takes almost no preparation time. The advent of frozen foods in the Indian kitchen has led to massive change in lifestyle of the urban middle-class by means of changing their food habits. The emergence of frozen food in the Indian food industry has witnessed an upsurge of processed food in the domestic markets. With an increasing salary bracket especially among the expanding middle class, a rise in the consumption of processed food in the subcontinent has been observed. Thus, the frozen food industry has now transformed into a demand driven industry in India and is one of the leading exporters of food from India. It is reported that around 30 million Indians, which comprises of both upper and middle-class consume packaged foods in high quantities. This figure is likely to reach 200 million within the next three years.

The food processing industry in India contributes 6.3 pc to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 19 pc to India’s industrial growth.

Growth rate and predictions

“Rapid urbanisation, changing lifestyles, rising number of working women and increasing per capita disposable income to drive India frozen food market through 2021,” reports a press release by TechSci Research Report.
