Tom Curran has been plucked from the Lions team to join the England senior set-up in the West Indies following an injury to Jake Ball, and I think it’s the right decision.
It makes me feel old when I played against Tom’s dad, Kevin, for a number of years. He was a great sportsman and athlete who was ultra-competitive. You see all those traits in his boys, both Tom and Sam.
From last season, where the brothers ripped through most of Division Two to gain Surrey promotion, it has been an assumption that they would both make the England senior team and Tom is the first to do it, but I’m sure Sam won’t be far behind.
I was with Tom as part of the ‘Tom Maynard Foundation’ at Desert Springs in Spain last year and I could tell that he had great passion for the game, and the skill to go with it.
I knew then that he would have a decent career.
Playing for England can be a lot about timing and circumstance, and maybe Tom has been a bit fortunate with injury to Mark Wood, but if you do the right things and work hard, then good karma comes your way.
Tom had done well with the Lions, taking ten wickets in the two matches against Sri Lanka A, and this shows that the whole set-up still works and is still used.
