Father's Way
FOR 15 YEARS I MOSTLY managed to put the terrifying notion out of my mind, and whenever unsettling thoughts of what lay ahead did manage to creep into my brain, usually I could kill them with an extra Jack Daniel’s in the evening easy chair.
Who The Hell Is Tavo Hellmund, And Why Is He North America's F1 Hero?
TAVO HELLMUND, the lean, dimpled, gimlet-eyed Texan who deftly negotiates the uptight, ultra-sophisticated, almost sinister world of Formula 1 on a daily basis, recently quit chewing tobacco.
Back From The Dead, Again
OVER THE COURSE OF THE automobile industry’s six score and 10 years, thousands of car brands have launched. Yet few have flourished, and today almost all have come and gone, save a handful. The car business is murder.
2017 Bentley Continental Supersports: Slower Than A Chiron But The Best Conti Yet
Eighty-nine years ago, Woolf Barnato and Bernard Rubin drove the famous Blower Bentley “Old Mother Gun” to victory at Le Mans. Today, you can buy a Bentley with nearly three times the horsepower and drive it to dinner. The 2017 Bentley Continental Supersports—the fastest, quickest, and most powerful production Bentley ever, which also happens to be the world’s fastest four-seater—is the pinnacle of the marque’s performance engineering, just as the Blower Bentley was.

Dreams Delivered
IT’S CHILLY AND gray, and reasonably hard rain is coming down, casting a pall over the otherwise lush, rugged beauty of this German-flavored slice of Switzerland. A terrible day to drive, a great day to be driven. I’m in the backseat of the all-new Rolls-Royce Phantom, and I roll down the double glazed acoustic-glass window to get a quick blast of fresh Swiss air. A cacophony of wind and water rudely intrudes into the cabin. Enough of that. The metal window button is cold to the touch when I press it, and as the window hits the seal it’s as if a set of noise-canceling headphones has suctioned over the car. Time to recline the seat, let my head hit the pillow, and enjoy the magic carpet ride.

IN HIS JUNE 2016 COLUMN, MY esteemed and always insightful colleague Jamie Kitman, while opining about what he sees as the curious I product strategy of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, asked, “What happens when every yahoo who ever wanted a four-door Wrangler either has one or soon will?”

Turning Point
JAGUAR LAND ROVER IS ON A ROLL. THE PATIENCE of parent company Tata Motors—and its willingness to invest in new product—means the two British luxury brands are healthier than ever. Land Rover, riding the global boom in SUV sales, is setting the pace and making the lion’s share of JLR’s profits right now. Jaguar, a latecomer to the SUV party with its new F-Pace, is playing catch-up as it moves away from relying on increasingly unfashionable sedans and niche-market sports cars. But both face near-term challenges.
The Baker, the King, Range Rover, and Me
ONE OF LIFE’S BITTERSWEET things is if you live long enough, many people you love, like, and admire will predecease you. That is the way it always was and, for the time being at least, the way it must be. But such realism was cold comfort today as I sat down to write about a couple sad car-world deaths, only to read of another, which I mention first.

BMW finally gives its 7 Series a dose of magic
Meet Socal's Phantom BMW Collector
The property in the midst of an older industrial estate looks more like a car graveyard than a collection’s home. Behind the wire fence rest a good dozen incognito casualties, protected against weather by yellow covers or gray tarp. Behind the gate, however, a tightly packed array of shining BMWs from the ’60s and ’70s await us in what is half warehouse, half workshop. When he ran out of floor space, 48-year-old Rey (last name withheld on request) started stacking the surplus stock on hoists.
